Common Types of Car Accidents

Have you been involved in a car accident? Odds are it was one of these types. Car accidents are classified by the nature of the impact between the two vehicles, and each different type has certain injuries they tend to cause. On our blog, our Fargo car accident attorney discuss these common types of car accidents and the injury risk associated with each of them.

Head-On Collisions

A head-on collision is easily the most dangerous type of car accident due the amount of force that is exerted on the human body in an instant. These happen when two cars, usually traveling in opposite directions at speed, run into each other from the front end. While cars do have a lot of protection on their front ends to absorb these impacts, it’s not uncommon for all types of injuries or even fatalities to occur.

Rear-End Collisions

A rear-end collision is when the front of one car collides with the rear of another. The rear of a car also has a fair amount of protection for the occupants of a struck vehicle, however it’s not uncommon for them to feel the effects in their neck and head. A rear-end accident is usually less dangerous than a head-on collision, but doe still have a high risk of injury.

Side-impact Collisions

There are two different kinds of side-impact collisions: side-swipe and T-bone accidents. Side-swipe accidents are when the sides of two vehicles collide, usually when one vehicle merges lanes into another without looking. These aren’t usually dangerous in terms of injury, unless it causes one of the drivers to lose control. T-bone collisions, on the other hand, are extremely dangerous, as cars don’t have a lot of protection along their sides. These tend to cause serious injuries to the occupants of vehicles, particularly those on the side of the vehicle that is struck.

Rollover Accidents

A rollover accident doesn’t happen all that often, particularly with all of the technology and equipment in cars that are designed to help them stay upright. As the name implies, these accidents are when a car “rolls over” onto its side or roof. The injuries these accidents can cause are somewhat varied, though head and neck trauma are not uncommon.

Single-Car Accidents

A single-car accident is one in which a vehicle loses control and collides with something like a fire hydrant, light pole, tree, or other obstacle on the side of the road. These are also not super common, and can be caused by everything from bad road conditions to poor weather to limited visibility to equipment failure. Because these accidents can vary so greatly, they can cause many different injuries.
